10 Oct 2007 That in between stage….
 |  Category: Madeline

Madeline is at that *great* in between stage of babyhood and toddler hood where I have no idea what to feed her.  She will not eat anything pureed, except yogurt and applesauce, and yet doesn’t really care too much for a lot of finger foods.  It is really frustrating.  The girl can’t eat yogurt and cheerios at every meal!

I’m struggling with what different kinds of toddler food to make her that she’ll eat.  We’ve been on sort of a health kick in our house lately, so I’m not going to do processed toddler meals, ravioli, etc.

For example, last night she had Kashi O’s (which are basically whole grain cheerios), about half a pear cut up (although a lot of it went in her lap not in her mouth) and about two bites of chicken.  It just doesn’t seem like enough to me!

I want to make sure she’s eating a sufficient amount of finger food because she still is not a good sleeper.  Most nights we are up with her at least twice, sometimes more.  I never bought into that whole idea of filling them up before bed so they’ll sleep through the night, but I’m starting to think there is some validity to it.   Now that she’s walking running everywhere, I think she burns off most of what goes in her mouth!

Thoughts?

Oh and on the Claire front, this morning as I was dropping her off at preschool she asked me…Mommy, why don’t you know all the kids names at my new school?  I said, well Claire there are more children at your new school than at your old school.  She looked at me puzzled and said “What???” then ran for breakfast.   Today is her hearing and speech test at school and I’m very interested in the results.  She hasn’t had a hearing test since she’s had her second tube surgery, and we’re both hoping that she doesn’t have any hearing damage from all of the fluid in her ears for so long.  She talks in such a loud voice that I wonder sometimes if she overcompensates for not being able to hear well.  We shall see soon enough!

  1. Molly LOVES to feed herself bananas and pears. We also do a lot of the O’s cereal.

You could also try pieces of cheese (especially string cheese), steak - Molly loves steak, cooked peas, cooked carrotts, soup (drain a lot of the liquid and cut it up)… I will keep thinking :)

  2. Oh, SOON enough you can do waffles and pancakes and eggs and you will feel a LOT better about how much food she is getting :)

  3. I know that you said you never bought into the idea of filling the kids up before bed, but…

When Reagan was that age I was also worried on some days that he didn’t eat much, and I was so worried about him waking up hungry. We always gave him milk before bed while reading books AND sometimes a few dry O’s.

And if she eats bananas as a pre-bedtime snack, that should also calm her.

    Good luck!
