13 Feb 2008 Caps for a Cause

POST UPDATED!

I’ve created a page for this contest - look on the bar at the top of this page.

Two years ago, my college roommate and best friend Sarah was diagnosed with brain cancer. She was pregnant and having horrible headaches and a few MRI’s later they found a tumor. She underwent surgery just a few days after her lovely daughter Katharine was born, and the tumor was successfully removed. She has persevered through radiation and chemo, but is cancer free today. In celebration for her recovery, I’ve decided to run a contest of sorts on my blog. Kim, of http://www.kdysworld.wordpress.com is running somewhat of a drive on her blog for www.chemocaps.com . Chemo Caps was an organization started by a woman who’s daughter, an avid knitter, died of cancer. She started her charity in her daughter’s memory so that people receiving cancer treatment and lose their hair can have a very soft hand knit cap to keep them warm and comfort their souls.

At any rate, here comes my contest. Every person who donates a hat to the hospital or hospice of their choice and leaves me a comment, will be entered into a drawing for a bunch of fantastic prizes!. You will need to comment both on Kim’s blog and on mine to be entered into both drawings and there must be some way for me to contact you. The deadline is March 31st, 2008. (See below for the “official” rules)

Before you get started, please read the www.chemocaps.com website for some general instructions about the caps. There are a number of patterns on her website that are available as well. It would seem to me that any hat that would be soft and warm with full coverage of the head (beanie style) would be suitable. I would think that Children’s Hospitals would welcome these donations as well - a great way to use up bits and pieces of your stash.

PRIZES

So far the following prizes have been offered for this contest:

THE OFFICIAL RULES

  1. You must knit or crochet a cap and donate it to the hospital/oncology center/hospice of your choice by March 31st, 2008. This is an honor system contest, so please don’t enter if you haven’t donated a cap.
  2. You enter the contest by commenting on my original blog post (http://www.watsonhighlands.com/archives/237). Please include the name of the hospital or center where you have donated the cap. You may enter at Kim’s blog as well for a chance to win multiple prizes.
  3. Winners will be chosen at random using a random number generator. Each entry will be assigned a number.
  4. Multiple caps = multiple entries. So please be honest about the number of hats that you have donated.

If I’ve forgotten anything, please let me know!
Thank you for your participation!!

You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0 feed. You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.

  1. I am so honored and happy to co-host the chemo cap challenge/contest with you! My goal is to inspire each and every knitter to knit one cap and donate it to charity (at least one…). With as many knitters/crocheters in the world, just imagine how many people we could help and comfort! The deadline to donate for my contest March 30th and I have some great prizes being donated…so please check me out at http://www.kdysworld.wordpress.com and let’s…

    Knit for good!

This is a great idea! My husband was diagnosed with testicular cancer. I of course made him a hat with custom bare sheep yarn but not everyone has that option. He recently had his first cat scan after his treatment and it is clear! He had his treatment at Mercy in Baltimore, MD. We will be visiting the dr on March 12th. I know they have free hats there and I will be sure to donate when we go in march. Thanks for making me think of it.

  3. Yay! First one!
I am donating a cap to my friend, and 1 for her to bring to Stanford with her when she has treatment.

  4. So many people have been touched by this terrible word “cancer”. Such a small word for what it is….

I will donate 8 ounces of custom dyed Merino of the winners color choice. Anne, just point me in a good direction so I can donate to your cause.

  5. Anne: I’m very interested however I need to check out the other site (CAPS) first and see what all is involved. I will be back with you shortly!

  6. I’ll set aside my socks and knit up a cap or two for a good cause. Thanks, too, for the little push I needed to find an important thing to do for Lent.

  7. Hi! “Friend” of Jenny at Bare Sheep Yarn Co. I read about this on her site.
In addition to donating a few hand knit caps, I would also like to donate a skein of my hand dyed, handspun sock yarn as a prize.
I will be donating a cap in honor of a local third grader, Brianna Bogner, who lost her battle with cancer just this past Christmas day. I will also donate one cap in honor of my grandmother, Bettie, who taught me to knit and lost her two-year battle with lung cancer on January 27th, 2006 and one cap in honor of my grandfather, Earl, who lost his battle with cancer on December 11, 1998.
Please let me know where to send my handspun skein if you would like to offer it as a prize.
This is a great cause - thanks for offering the motivation to everyone!

  8. I just mailed a total of 22 caps both knitted and crocheted to be distributed at the Oakland Children’s Hospital. I hope I don’t need to do 22 sepaprate entries on the blog, one should suffice :-)
Hopefully many others will jump on the bandwagon and get the caps rolling in to all the treatment centers and hospices across the nation.

  9. I donated 5 hats to my cancer center — as well as gathered some from friends. Thanks for the contest!

  14. I mailed 4 caps to my grandmother to take to Tampa General Hospital the next time they visit. I live about an hour and a half away now, so she’s taking them in for me.

  15. Hello fellow hat attack competitor!
Meant to post this earlier but got bogged down in other projects. 2 caps sent out last week to Univ. of Penn Hospital. See my blog for photo!

  16. I have been having quite the trouble posting to your blog… so I am hoping this will get through…

I dropped off 15 hats I made last Sunday and 2 hats my friend Natasha made…

This gives me a total for this compitition of 26 hats
and gives Natasha a total of 3 hats donated for this compitition…

We are both looking forward to making many more in the days to come

  17. I’m too late for your contest, but I have donated about 50 in the last 2 years to my oncologist’s office.

I had breast cancer 2 years ago and this is my way to pay it forward!
