03 Nov 2008 Split Screen Sadness
 |  Category: Anne - General, Politics |  One Comment

I totally have the pre-election day blues because it saddens me how this race has become so intensely personal between friends, family, acquaintances, that people have stopped talking to one another.  I know in light of recent events, I’ve had to work through a lot of this emotion myself.

Jonathan shared this post from one of his favorite blogs, Mirror of Justice, this morning and I think it sums up the sentiment that I wish we all could agree upon.   Enjoy.

Taking a Breath

A couple of weeks ago I was in the middle of an email exchange with a friend, and our discussion of campaign issues was becoming pretty heated. Before pressing the “send” button, something (Someone?) inside suggested that I take a breath and ask whether my email message would build up or destroy our friendship. As a result of this, I suggested to my friend that we bracket a part of our conversation until we could continue it in person. The following week, my friend walked into my office with a hug and a chocolate bar, saying “this is a peace offering, I am sorry for being intemperate.” I pulled out some homemade chocolate chip cookies, saying “I’m sorry too,” and we picked up where we had left off. Looking each other in the eyeballs, the conversation took a completely different turn. We’re not done with our conversation, and we still disagree on significant points. But I am sure that this friendship will last beyond November 4th.

Suddenly, another voice spoke, low and melodious, its very sound an enchantment. Those who listened unwarily to that voice could seldom report the words that they heard; and if they did, they wondered, for little power remained in them. Mostly they remembered only that it was a delight to hear the voice speaking, all that it said seemed wise and reasonable, and desire awoke within them by swift agreement to seem wise themselves. When other spoke they seemed harsh and uncouth by contrast; and if they gainsaid the voice, anger was kindled in the hearts of those under the spell. For some the spell lasted only while the voice spoke to them, and when it spoke to another they smiled, as men do who see through a juggler’s trick while others gape at it. For many the sound of the voice alone was enough to hold them enthralled; but for those whom it conquered the spell endured when they were far away, and ever they heard that soft voice whispering and urging them. But none were unmoved; none rejected its please and its commands without an effort of mind and will, so long as its master had control of it. LOTR, pg. 601

Usually It’s Jonathan that posts more “political” things on this blog. Usually I try to stay out of the conversation.  However, I am incredibly excited about John McCain picking Sarah Palin to be his running mate, and I can’t hold it in any longer.

I could go into many many reasons why I am thrilled by her nomination, but rather than list them all, I thought I’d share an article published in the First Things blog just today:

It’s a worthwhile and somewhat emotional read, but it hits on the majority of the points as to why I’m all about Sarah Palin and her being our next Vice President.

South Bend Community School Corporation told Hillary Clinton “no thanks, we don’t want you to come and speak at Washington High School”.

Ha. :)

They totally get a point in my book.
